FAQRegistry Jumper Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Index:

Q: You say your program helps to navigate Windows registry. I am novice in it. What is registry?

A: This site is not dedicated to Windows Registry. You can become familiar with Windows Registry through such articles as:

Q: What is Regedit? How to use it?

A: The Regedit (the Microsoft Registry Editor) is a program that ships with Windows and can be launched by executing command regedit.exe. It allows you to view, search for, and change settings in your system registry. Generally, Microsoft does not recommend direct registry editing (quote from Microsoft):

Registry editors are available that enable you to inspect and modify the registry. However, you should not need to do so. Instead, allow Windows programs to modify the system registry as needed. It is strongly recommended that you do not edit registry settings yourself.

For more information about Regedit you can see the article Learning to Use the Registry Editor Like a Pro.

Q: I didn't find any Regedit command line switches navigating Regedit to a specific location. How Registry Jumper does it?

A: Yes, Regedit supports some command line parameters for various tasks, but not for navigating. Registry Jumper works other way: it simulates keystrokes and sends it to the Regedit window as if it typed by user. Because Registry Jumper does it quickly, much quicker than the best typist can, you almost doesn't see any delay.

Q: How can I backup the registry?

A: Read Microsoft recommendations about it here: How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

Also, Regedit.exe has command line options for backing up/restoring registry.

Q: When Regedit is started (manually or by Registry Jumper), it displays the last opened registry key. How to prevent Regedit from restoring last location and reduce time of Regedit startup?

A: Regedit saves last state in the registry key LastKey in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit. Microsoft has article HOW TO: Prevent Regedit.exe from Using the Last State describing how to disable it.

Q: Search in Regedit is a rather slow operation. How to search for particular information in registry faster?

A: We could suggest you the following method: first, save all registry in a file (for example, c:\all.txt) performing command:
regedit /E c:\all.txt
After that you can search for necessary strings in this text file with any text editor, usually it will be faster than in Regedit.
